iPhone Dev Team Release Instructions to JailBreak iPhone Firmware v1.1.3

Before I go into the details it is important to mention that before you jailbreak your iPhone, be sure to backup in iTunes so you can restore your iPhone if something goes terribly wrong and since I have not tried this method I am not in a position to cannot confirm either way so do remember that hacking your iPhone is completely at your own risk.

The jailbreak method comes as an soft-update which means that you need to start with jailbroken iPhone running firmware v1.1.1 or v1.1.2 with Installer.app installed on it. You must also have BSD Subsystem 1.5 or later installed on your iPhone. It is important to note here that this installer does not upgrade the baseband. It only creates a log directory.

So it means that this method will not work if you have upgraded to firmware v1.1.3 or if you have recently bought an iPhone that shipped with 1.1.3 out-of-the-box. In case you have upgraded your iPhone to v1.1.3 then all is not lost as you can follow this link for the instructions on how to downgrade to v1.1.2 or v1.1.2 from v1.1.3.

This method directly works on the iPhone and hence is platform independent, all you need to do is copy some files to your jailbroken iPhone to use the patch.

Before you start the jailbreak process it is advisable to take the some precautions such as change the auto-lock settings to "Never" in order to prevent it from shutting down the connection. Also ensure that you are connected via Wi-Fi as the installer downloads a significant amount of data from Apple’s website and with the charge cable connected.

Once the above precautions have been taken you can proceed with the jailbreak process:

• Download this file.
• Copy the all the files that have been extracted to / on your iPhone/iPod Touch So you will have /update-prebinding-path.txt and so on.
• Use this command to copy the files: scp -r ./* root@YOURIPHONEIPADDRESS:/.
• Run the install.sh script on your iPhone sh install.sh.
• The device will perform an upgrade and reboot into 1.1.3.

The iPhone Dev team have a few suggestions/tips:

“If something DOES go wrong, restore back to 1.1.2 / Jailbroken and try again. If you get something like illegal hardware instruction, just try rebooting and it should be updated to 1.1.3. If you don’t get service, try a forced-power-down then power back on.”
